Article by Paul Fraser

Following his .2m sale of US Confederate Provisionals and British North American stamps late last year, PIMCO’s ‘Bond King’ and the greatest stamp collector of modern times, Bill Gross, is putting another set of extremely fine and rare stamps back into the market.

This time, it is his Western Europe and its Colonies collection on offer. Specifically, stamps from France and Colonies, German Offices and Colonies, Italian States and Spain will be available to collectors for the first time in a number of years.

The sale is his fifth in recent years, following his Great Britain collection (which in realised the highest amount for any single stamp auction ever in 2007), his Scandinavia collection in May of 2008, his British Empire from October 2008 and the double auction of North American stamps in November 2009.

We will bring you a number of the most exciting lots from the sales in coming days, but two key highlights are to be tête-bêche pairs from the 1849-1850 Ceres issue from France.

A tête-bêche, or head-to-tail, pair is where a joined pair of stamps is printed with one stamp inverted relative to the other. These are occasionally produced in error during printing, or sometimes deliberately for collecting.

One of the finest on offer here is a 6c, 1849 25c blue-on-yellowish pair with facing tête-bêche images. Despite a (well-sealed) tear in the lower left corner, this is a beautiful piece with uniformly large margins all around and deep, rich colour on fresh paper.

One of only three unused examples known (and listed in Life magazine in 1954 as an example of a world rarity – an excellent opportunity for investment), this pair was once part of the collection of Count Ferrary, has some original gum remaining and is listed here with a guide price of 5,000.

A cover featuring a tête-bêche pair of the same kind is also on offer with an estimate of ,000.

The second unused tête-bêche pair to lead the sale is an 1849 1Fr light carmine-on-yellowish pair with intense colour on fresh paper and ample to mostly large margins all around (slimmest at the top).

One of four known to exist, and widely recognised as one of the greatest tête-bêche pairs of its kind, the piece has been a key lot in some of the greatest collections of French stamps ever known, including Ferrary once more. It is expected to bring 5,000 here.

The auction, at Spink Shreves Auction Galleries will take place in New York on May 19, 2010 with the proceeds going to Médecins Sans Frontières. Watch this space for more news on the highlights.

Stamp Collecting For Beginning Philatelists

To become a stamp enthusiast with the exciting hobby of collecting stamps, all you need to do is decide on a topic and then purchase some stamps.

If you have particular theme or topic in mind, start with that.

Popular collecting themes can vary from animals, dogs, cats, farm animals, butterflies, birds, flowers, art, sports, Olympics, maps, scouting, space, ships, cars, trucks, trains, planes, caravans, stamps on stamps, famous people, chess, scenery or lifestyle images, pop culture icons, Disney characters, famous individuals, Elvis Presley, Princess Diana, royalty, flags, single countries and/or time periods, historical periods, definitive or commemorative stamps, Worldwide collections, revenue stamps, postal stationery, sheet lets, miniature sheets, souvenir sheets, corner blocks or plate blocks, postmarks, postage due stamps/labels, Philatelic literature, First day covers – (FDCs), counterfeit/forged postage stamps, Cinderellas, Geographic collections and so on.

My suggestion if you are just beginning, would be to focus on the nation in which you live. That’s because your already familiar with your own native country and the postage stamps are readily available from mail delivered to your home.

The best way to further your love of stamp collecting is to immerse yourself by taking advantage of every possible resource available.

There are many different ways and places to find stamps, for a price and for free, both on-line and off.

Surfing the Internet for good stamp dealers with stamp sites offering stacks of assorted wide-ranging stamps packets for sale, is a good place to start. Most collectors find that the larger packets have the best stamps in them.

E Bay is a great resource where you can bid at stamp auctions, as well as buy and sell stamps. On e Bay, you’ll find thousands of auctions for affordable, collectible stamps.

You can get stamps through the mail via Web sites, either by approval (the stamp dealer sends you a collection of assorted stamps and you decide which ones to keep) or you can supply a wants list (when a stamp dealer checks his or her stock and quotes prices for specific stamps you want to collect).

You could entrench yourself in the philatelic community to obtain information. There are forums and groups where you can get together with other collectors with much the same interests to yours.

You can trade with other stamp collectors by joining on-line trading lists or requesting trades via trading groups or forums. There are pros and cons to all on line trading sites, but sometimes it’s just enjoyable to browse what’s offered.

Philatelic exhibitions are an excellent place to get superior information and for meeting stamp traders.

You could join your local stamp club. Most regions have stamp clubs that advertise meeting times in national Philatelic magazines.

You could go through Stamp Collecting magazines looking for ads where you can subscribe to stamp auction catalogs. National Philatelic magazines are a terrific resource for all things philatelic.

Lots of stamp collecting books are available through public libraries and bookstores. Information is freely available on the Internet.

To assist your collecting, you can check the values of your stamps in the most current Catalog.

A cardboard shoe box is a good place to store your stamps where they will be safe and not damaged when you first begin to collect stamps.

When you begin to accumulate a large collection, you’ll need to put your favorites in some sort of logical order in your stamp album.

Whatever storage system you decide to follow is up to you, as long as you display and continue to build up your Postage Stamps Collection.

Happy stamping

Article by Paul Fraser Collectibles

In New York on January 27, Spink Shreves kicked off its sale of British North American stamps with a very special highlight…

The piece is question was an exquisite example of the Canadian 1851 12d Black on laid paper which has been nicknamed The Black Empress.

The 12d black is always valuable, but this example is in freakishly good condition for a 150-year-old stamp. As the auctioneer put it:

“There is no question that this stamp is the finest mint example in existence.

“Its overall freshness, along with its extravagantly large margins, combined with the fact that it boasts full original gum that has never been hinged – places it in a category unlike any other world-class philatelic rarity in existence.

The Black Empress of Canada

“Truly, it is a miracle how this remarkable stamp survived for nearly 160 years in this condition. While there are two or three mint singles that exist which are quite well margined, along with five pairs (one of which is in the Canadian Postal Archives and another in the Tapling Collection), not one is as superb as the example offered here, nor is any other example never hinged (and certified as such).”

The Philatelic Foundation assigned a grade of Superb 98 to the stamp, which is unheard of when dealing with world-class rarities. Spink Shreves compares it to an example in Bill Gross’s remarkable sale of British North American stamps.

“The last original gum, premium quality, mint example of the 12d Black was in our November 2009 sale of the William H Gross collection of Important British North America …

“While the Gross example is a wonderfully choice stamp, its margins are not near as large as found on The Black Empress and, more significantly, it was hinged, as is every other known single or pair – except for the exciting example offered here.”

The Empress did not disappoint achieving a bid worthy of a King’s ransom: 5,000.

Article by Victor Epand

The hobby of collecting stamps has become the foundation of trust between collector and dealers all over the world. Philatelists conduct transactions by dealing with reputable dealers and individual collectors who have memberships in the American Philatelic Society and/or the American Stamp Dealers Association.

By working with members of these associations, collectors can rely on the authenticity of stamps they are purchasing. Collectors are offered peace of mind and that enables them to purchase stamps without too much worry. The primary source to purchase stamps is with dealers and collectors who belong to one or both of these two organizations to ensure the authenticity of your collection.

The Internet is another vital source of information for stamp collectors. You can do search for information on individual stamps by using key words, such as “stamp collecting”, “philately” etc. If the Universal Resource Locator or URL is known of any dealer, then all that is needed is to key in the URL into your browser, which will bring up the dealer’s website. Another way to search is through the American Philatelic Society website where you can find a list of dealers.

There are also a variety of auctions where you can purchase stamps at a price that is below their market value. Philatelists typically subscribe to auction catalogs to stay current on any stamps that they are interested in and to find out if any are going to soon be offered at auctions.

Understanding the process of purchasing stamps at auctions will give any collector another avenue to purchase the stamps they need for their private collections. By joining area stamp clubs or a philatelic organization you will be able to accomplish this and at the same time become acquainted with other collectors having the same interest.

A number of affiliated organizations of the American Philatelic Society devote their time to stamps from particular countries, themes, and topics. One such organization is the United States Philatelic Classics Society that specializes in stamps of the 19th century within the United States. By maintaining a membership in one or more of these organizations many doors will open for you, which include obtaining valuable information on how to purchase stamps through trading with group members.

Periodicals are constantly being published that include stamp show schedules, which seem to be the most active market for purchasing stamps. These types of shows tend to be on a large scale and any collector should be able to locate reputable firms who specialize in dealing with philatelic material. Another valuable source for acquiring stamps for your collection is directly from the postal administrations of various countries, which can be found in publications such as a stamp almanac.

When you develop a better understanding of purchasing stamps from the market place, another way to obtain stamps is by running a classified ad in your local newspaper under either Stamps Wanted or Buying Stamps. You might be surprised at the number of people that are interested in selling their stamps. Collectors all over will sell their stamps to remove particular stamps from their collections or they will run an ad offering to sell their stamps. However, before searching for any stamp be sure you are acquainted with all purchasing methods.

Finding philately and stamps online from a reliable dealer takes some patience and some research. There are several stamp dealers in Italy and many of them are fair in their prices. The trick is to find one that suits your needs and can find you the stamps you are looking for.

Choosing a Stamp Dealer

Begin looking for a good philatelic dealer by asking your peers that are also interested in stamp collecting. Look to philatelists the have been plying their hobby for many years. They should have the names of several Italian dealers of philately and stamps online. You can also look in the back of stamp catalogues or even online. Keep in mind, however, without a personal recommendation you are at the mercy of fraudulent dealers.

Working With a Philatelic Dealer

Philatelic dealers sell their wares at a rate called a premium. This premium includes their mark-up. Some of the wares that can be purchased from these dealers are covers, postage stamps and other related items. You may purchase the desired stamps outright or you may be required to bid on them. This is an especially prominent means of acquiring stamps on the internet. Philatelic dealers will also be willing to purchase items from their customers. If a dealer is selling a set of stamps they will price the set according the rarest and most valuable stamp in the collection.

Selecting the Right Dealer

Take your time to get to know two or three dealers that you think might work for you. Ask for references and review the items they have for sale as well as the prices. You want to select a dealer that has the most favorable prices. You also want to find a dealer whose focus is the same as yours. You want your philatelic interests to match your dealers.

Stamp dealers are the primary resource for philately and stamps online. These dealers can be individuals or a company and their purpose is to provide their clients with philately and stamps online that are worthy of investing. Finding the best dealer in Italy means asking other stamp collectors who they use as a dealer. And you want to match your needs to the dealer’s specialty and area of expertise.

Article by Groshan Fabiola

No matter from what continent or country, people are known for their love for collecting various items. And one of these items, some of the most valuable are stamps, rare stamps to be more exact. Rare stamps can be purchased from a number of sources, like collectors, stamp dealers, and stamp auctions.

Some collect stamps for their personal pleasure and some for profit. This article is intended to act as a guide for those collectors and stamp dealers that wish to make a profit from purchasing and collecting stamps.

Stamp dealers are known for making a terrible mistake at least once in the course of their enterprise. And that mistake is not knowing when to sell their most prized stamps. As a reaction to this, all the time spent with trying to find and acquire valuable stamps, is wasted because collectors and stamp dealers, in the beginning, do not realize the importance of knowing when to actually place a stamp on the market.

The profit that can be returned to an investment, usually constitutes 10-15% per year, but it is not a rule. In the case of stamp collectors, taking the correct steps in order to ensure maximum profit, constitutes a vital action. Numerous collectors decide to sell their stamp collections or rare stamps, to stamp dealers instead of taking them to stamp auctions, thus losing considerable amounts of money.

Also, when faced with a great wide offer, some stamp dealers tend to offer wholesale prices and try to get discounts over discounts on account of some bogus claims. The only advantage that a stamp collector might have, when selling their individual stamps or stamp collections, to stamp dealers, is that the sale timeframe is very short and that also, stamp dealers work with cash.

When deciding to sell an extensive stamp collection, it is best that a collector correctly grades and classifies his stamps, so that he can sell them individually or in small groups at stamp auctions instead of taking the easy way out and sell them to the first stamp dealer that shows interest.

Determining the value of a collection is equally as important, so if a particular collector is not able to determine the correct value of a collection or a stamp, then he must take his collection to be professionally evaluated at a licensed evaluator or at stamp auction houses. The best advice would be to not take a collection to the same person that purchases it, because that stamp dealer might not have the best intentions, as you may suspect.

One last advice would be to take special care of your collection, and oversee every step of a sale, from the evaluation to the payment type through which you receive the funds due for the transaction.

Article by steve cooper

Stamp collecting is a hobby that dates back to the 1840s when the first stamp known as “Penny Black” was issued by Great Britain. Prior to this year, man’s communication system was done primitively without the use of postal service maybe be cause man has not yet appreciated the functions of a post master and the corresponding costs of hiring him and his postmen..

British postmaster general Sir Rowland Hill came up with the concept of using a stamp that would be paid by the letter sender as early as 1837 but the long debates stretched the issuance of the first stamped letter three years after that proposal.

The first issued stamp, which had a photo of Queen Victoria, became known as Penny Black because it used black ink and it required a penny for one stamp. The United States, which caught on the practice of sending letters with a stamp, made its first stamp in 1847 with the image of Benjamin Franklin.

Since then, philatelists or stamp collectors have started their vocation. Stamp collecting may look like a simple hobby but listen to philatelists do their stamp banter and you would get lost in the way.

While the word ambulant may commonly refer to medicine or ambulances, philatelists view an ambulant as a roving post office. And do you know that stamp makers protect stamps from counterfeiting by placing a burelage or a design on top of the stamp?

When philatelists say grill, they are not talking abut dinner but parallel line pattern pushed into stamps to prevent the reuse of stamps. And when you hear the words killer or killer cancel, do not call a policeman just yet because they are just referring to the cancellation of a particular design of stamp.

A cancelled mail which does not reveal the identity of the canceling post office can be referred to as a mute cancel. While a specimen naturally refers to an object placed and studied in a microscope, the word specimen in philatelist lingo

When you are just starting your stamp collecting hobby you will probably be inundated with words like adhesive which refers to that sticky substance under a stamp which enable you to stick it easily to an envelope. Stamps with cancellation marks mean stamps that have been marked to show previous usage.

When choosing your stamp collection, you can start with collecting commemorative stamps or stamps issued to commemorate a particular person, event or for a significant reason. In 1893, the United States issued its first commemorative stamps to mark the discovery made by Christopher Columbus

And when you are asked by a philatelist of you got your stamps from a covered enveloped, it may just mean that the envelope has been mailed. A denomination on the other hand does not refer to a religious group but to how much the stamp is worth in terms of postage.

Stamp collectors use simple but weird terms like referring to a stamp placed on an envelope but which was canceled the very first day it was sold as first day cover. Business people may be more familiar with the term revenue stamps which refer to stamps that are not for postage of a letter but for the payment of taxes.

So now that you are quite familiar with the philatelists’ lingo, it may be time to get to know the process of creating stamps. For quite a long time, it was the postmaster general who decided on the design of stamps that will be issued. However, the US legislators started making laws about the subjects to be featured on stamps, giving rise to the formation of a committee that will review the stamp designs.

At least fifty thousand stamp design ideas from Americans are reviewed by the committee annually. Out of these, only 35 ideas are recommended by the committee to the postmaster general who then makes the final decision.

While any design idea can be entertained, the general rule is that only dead people can be the subject of a US postage stamp. As a general rule only former presidents can be depicted in US stamps at any time after their death while other people can only be depicted in the stamps at least ten years after their death.

Everyone knows that a stamp is a small piece of paper that is glued to the exterior of a letter or parcel sent via the post office. It is used both locally and internationally as proof of paid fee for the service rendered.

Stamps represent something more for the collector. They represent significant valuable pieces to a large imagined puzzle to be assembled physically in the collection according to the concept within the collector’s mind.

It is important to note that a distinction exists between philately and stamp collection. The philatelist both collects and studies stamps, postmarks, and related materials where a stamp collector does not study them.

Stamp collecting often begins by cutting out stamps that come from letters the collector receives. While some may come locally, others can come from friends and family abroad. Next the collector often beings going to the post office and buying stamps in bulk in order to add more to the collection.

Collecting stamps can only go so far without involving other people. A collector can ask friends and family members to also contribute the stamps that come on their incoming mail. Another option is to look for stamps offered for sale in the classified ads of the newspaper.

As usual, the Internet is an especially good source to find and obtain stamps. There exist many Web sites designed to do exactly that, making it simple to expand an existing stamp collection.

If the goal is to collect rare, old, or foreign stamps it is advisable to join philatelic exhibitions and bid at auctions. The savvy collector should be able to find some good deals that would be ideal additions to their collection.

Purchasing stamps is just one way to deal with other collectors. Another common method is to trade stamps within both collections with each collector’s goal being to create a more complete collection.

The acquisition of stamps is just one aspect of what stamp collectors do. They must also take care of the stamps in their collection so that the appearance and value of each stamp is maintained. This not only keeps the collection worthy of display, but also ensures the stamps within it are tradable or saleable if the collector should desire to do so.

The proper way to take care of a stamp is placing it in an album designed to protect stamps. Stamps should never be placed on facing pages as this can harm or even destroy them. If absolutely necessary, a plastic sheet placed over the stamps will allow the stamps to be placed on the facing page. However, a new album should be purchased in this case, as the purpose of collecting stamps is to maintain their worth, not risk damaging them to avoid the cost of an additional album.

Stamps should be handled with extreme care. Human hands are dirty and oily. Tongs should always be used when handling stamps to minimize the chance of causing damage. Tongs are a tool similar to tweezers but with thinner edges, making the safe handling of a stamp easier. Even when using tongs, handling stamps should be strictly minimized.

In order to properly remove a stamp from an envelope cut a small portion of the surrounding area and put it in water. Once the stamp is free, use tongs to extract it from the paper underneath and carefully air dry before inserting it in the album.

Many things can harm stamps. The most common culprit is sunlight. The UV rays in sunlight can change or fade the colors on the stamp and when heated the gum on the back of the stamp may adhere it to the album making it difficult to remove without damage. Stamps must always be stored at room temperature.

Food and drink never belong in the area when stamps are being handled. A stamp collection should be kept well separated from any tobacco smoke to prevent the odor from being captured by the paper in the collection. Failing to take these steps, regardless of the degree of caution exercised, can result in devastating damage from just a single accident.

Stamp collecting can be an easy and rewarding hobby for many people. The potential rewards of the hobby increase dramatically if key facts are known and care is taken to ensure the collection will be as remarkable in years to come as when each piece is added.
